With so many computers on the market, the volume of choices can be overwhelming. Each device is designed to fulfill specific requirements, depending on how you will be using it. When looking into purchasing a new computer, here are a few points to consider:

1. Intended Use
First and foremost, make a list of everything you plan on using your new computer for. Do you anticipate only using it once a week to check emails or do an occasional Google search? Will you be using it eight hours a day for a remote job? Are you an avid gamer or video creator? Who will be using the computer – just you or the entire family? All of these questions will guide your buying decisions and should be determined before starting the purchasing process.

2. Mobile or Stationary?
When considering your expected computer uses, be sure to note where you plan on using your device. If you are frequently on the go and would like a device that can travel with you, it is best to look into a laptop, tablet or other mobile device. If large screens are more important to you than mobility, a desktop computer may be for you.

3. Evaluate Costs
Before heading too far down the purchasing trail, stop and evaluate your budget. Computers and laptops can run anywhere from $200-$2,000, based on features, storage space, size, etc. Research a variety of devices to find one that balances your needs with your available budget.

4. Predicted Storage Needs
RAM – or random access memory – is very important to consider when buying a new computer. If you don’t have enough RAM, you risk your computer being too slow or even malfunctioning. Be sure that the device has an RAM of at least 4 GB, but if you anticipate using your computer for gaming or graphic design projects, shoot for at least 8 GB.

5. Mac or PC?
Most people have a personal preference that draws them to either a Mac or a PC. We personally suggest PCs, but both have their advantages and disadvantages. Remember, both require anti-virus software to be fully protected, not just PCs. We also highly recommend encryption on all mobile and laptop Mac devices.
