Do I Have to Run Anti-Virus on My Mac?

The widely believed notion that Mac devices are immune from viruses is nothing more than an old wives tale of the digital world. We’d like to offer some special insight into this issue so that you can keep your Mac as secure as possible.

While it may be true that Windows devices are more at risk due to market saturation and that they do not use UNIX, a more secure underlying operating system used by Macs, it doesn’t mean that Macs are completely impenetrable.

Getting a virus on a Mac is unlikely, but because cyber criminals never rest, it’s always a good idea to stay one step ahead with anti-virus software.

Here are a few types of software to choose from:

  • Avira Mac Security – This software is user friendly and has flawless performance when it comes to detecting malware. It’s also free, which of course is an added bonus.
  • ESET – this AV brings just about every security tool you could desire to OS X, but you’ll have to shell out for the pricier Pro version to get everything.
  • Avast Free Mac Security – This software is also free, easy to use and provides good information. Its features are more basic than Avira, but it will get the job done.
  • Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac – This software is $39.95 for a year (good for two devices) and has excellent on-demand detection. The only drawback is that its on-access malware detection isn’t quite as good as Avira and Avast.

Any of these options will suffice, but our top recommendation goes to Avira because of its easy usability and strong protection components. Don’t wait until viruses become as common in Macs as in Windows – protect your devices now to stay ahead of the security curve.
